Oaxaca Photo Expedition with a Fujifilm Ambassador

Journey summary

This 5 days experience in Oaxaca is all about finding your own unique vision in the charming and magical southern Mexican city of Oaxaca and the surrounding region.  Open to both serious amateurs and professionals alike, this expedition is focussed on emphasizing storytelling, developing your personal vision and editing your own work all the while exploring Oaxaca city and the beautiful surrounding locations like the Valle Central, Zaachila and Hierve el Agua.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1 –  Oaxaca, Mexico 
Arrive in Oaxaca and check into our hotel, located just a few blocks from the Zócalo, the center of the city. This evening we will gather for a welcome reception and dinner.

Day 2 – Monte Albán 
We will visit Monte Albán, the religious, political, and commercial center of the Zapotec. We will photograph the archeological site in the morning. In the afternoon we will have an editing and critique session. After that we visit Santo Domingo where we will have the opportunity to make street photography.

Day 3 –  Alternatives
Zaachila (if Thursday) We will visit Zaachila Market, in the south of Oaxaca town. This market is know for trading of animals like goats, pigs, sheep, cows etc. We will have the opportunity to take photos documenting the atmosphere and the vibrant energy of a typical Mexican marketplace. You will eat delicious food there like barbacoa and the fantastic Nieves (a sort of ice cream), the best of Mexico.

Day 3 – Alternative: Mitla and Hierve el Agua.
We will explore the remarkable ruins of Mitla this morning. Mitla, known as “world of the dead” was an important ceremonial center built by the Zapotec. Then we will head into the quaint town of Hierve el Agua. We will visit Hierve el Agua, a set of natural rock formations that resemble cascades of water. The area is great for nature and landscape photography. We head back to Oaxaca for dinner and a feedback session.

Day 4 –  Alternatives: Ocotlan (if Friday)
Travel to Ocotlan Friday market for a photo shoot. We will have lunch there and then we head back to Oaxaca. This afternoon you will head out to photograph the city at your leisure.  At night we will enjoy a street photography walk in the city of Oaxaca.

Day 4 –  Alternative: San Sebastian de las Flores, Etla 
You will visit this rural village of the Valle Central.  You will have the opportunity to visit a family or working with Alex documenting the work for an NGO. Evening lecture, edit and critique session.

Day 5 – Oaxaca
On day 5 you will explore the city of Oaxaca, visiting several barrios and important places of the City. It will be an intense day of photography in the streets and eating delicious food. On the afternoon/evening last critique session and conclusion of the workshop with the awarding of diplomas followed by a dinner together.

Included
Airport transfers, all 5 nights hotel accommodations, all ground transport and required passes (Mitla, Hieve el Agua), all breakfasts, certificate of participation, unlimited feedback after this workshop with a real mentoring program, electronic books, publication opportunities on my blog and magazine, subscription to the the street photographer notebook magazine (12 months).

A DSLR or mirrorless camera with any lenses you like. A 24-35mm lens preferred

This expedition is open to all levels of photographers. It is set up in a workshop format and includes intense
photography with several shoots, night and day, including daily feedback, with critiques, focused to make you a better photographer and getting able you discover your vision and to produce stunning images for your portfolio and photographic growth.
